A Pryor inmate got a brief taste of freedom Wednesday after he escaped police custody.
However, that freedom was short lived, as officers caught up to the prisoner within 20 minutes.
Nathan Hanks, 28, Pryor, was being transported from the Pryor jail to the Mayes County jail.
Chief Dennis Nichols said an officer had Hanks in the back area of the police station and Hanks ran from the officer. His shoes flipped off as he ran because the shoes had no laces due to safety reasons.
Hanks ran west of the station. Nichols said at one time, a relative of Hanks was known to live in the area and officers had that house surrounded.
Members of the Mayes County Sheriff’s office and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol assisted Pryor Police officers in the search which lasted approximately 20 minutes.
Hanks was spotted between Taylor and Whitaker streets. He was taken into custody by Detective Derek Melton and transported to the Mayes County Jail.
Hanks was originally arrested and charged with two felony counts of lewd molestation and will now face a felony charge of escaping custody.
He was arraigned at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday on the lewd molestation charge. His bond is $100,000.
