United Way cuts funding

PRYOR — The Mayes County United Way announced that due to a lack of donations received for the 2012 United Way program year, it will decrease the amount of funding it is able to offer to participating organizations that serve the residents of Mayes County.

Over the past three years, the Mayes County United Way received donations from the community and local businesses in excess of $109,000, and ninety-nine percent of the collected funds are distributed directly to local, charitable organizations that support the residents of Mayes County.

This year, the Mayes County United Way only received funding and pledges to distribute $63,000. The 2012 budget represents a 43 percent decrease in funding available American Red Cross, Boy Scouts Boys & Girls Club, CARD, Inc., Cherokee Elders Council Chouteau Ministerial Alliance, Chouteau Senior Citizens, Free Medical Clinic, Girl Scouts, Locust Grove Emergency Fund, Locust Grove Sr. Nutrition, Mayes County Cancer Support, Pryor Ministries Center, Pryor Rescue Mission, Safenet Services, Inc., Salina Senior Citizens Center, Salvation Army, Sertoma Club, Sertoma Senior Citizens Center, Strang Senior Citizens, Tri-County Casa WWB Childrens Adocacy Center, Womens’s Outreach of Hope.

Jeff Kolker, President of Mayes County United Way said, “The reduction in available United Way funds for Mayes County organizations is alarming and should be a call to action for all local Mayes County businesses, industrial, educational and professional employers. We need to ensure that we are all supporting, either financially and/or through volunteering time, the United Way and their agencies that support the residents of our community.”
