Commissioners open fire department bids

The Mayes County Board of Commissioners had a short agenda Monday. The meeting was called to order at 9:30 a.m., and the commissioners quickly approved the previous meeting’s minutes. Having no old or new/unforseen business the committee began discussing bids for an addition to the existing fire department at Disney.

The new addition will be a building 45 feet by 60 feet by12 feet to store vehicles. The commissioners reviewed bids that ranged from $18,923 to $96,561, but voted to table the issue for the fire chief’s review.

The commissioners voted to retire the beloved sheriff’s office tracking dog, Mara. Sheriff Mike Reed said he got the dog as a puppy, but she was trained by someone else.

“It has been trained by someone different, in a different environment.  When a dog works closely with someone like that for a couple years, breaking them up is hard on the dog and the trainer,” said Reed.

The dog has been trained, and worked alongside Eddie Matthews.

“Eddie is a reserve. He said we could still use Mara when we needed her,” said Reed.

The commissioners approved retiring Mara to Matthews.

Reed plans to purchase a new dog to fill the position.
