Norma Russell listens to the Lord. So when he told her to make 100 quilts, she started sewing.
The Locust Grove resident began the project on New Year’s Day and by May, she was finished
Russell said she prayed about what to do with the quilts. Initially, she had hoped to take all of them to Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
Saint Jude’s declined her offer.
The Shriner’s Hospital for children in Shreveport, La., was happy to give patients a chance to enjoy a bit of home comfort.
On July 19, Russell traveled to Shreveport with 50 quilts. The next day, Russell presented quilts to 20 children. She left the remaining 30 quilts at the hospital to be given to future patients.
Russell received donations of material from local residents to make the quilts. Each quilt has a different pattern.
Russell said God told her ‘Those children have so much fear because they are afraid that they are going to die.’
“The thought came to me like a security blanket. So that’s why I want to give quilts to them. Each and every child that I give a quilt to, I want to pray for them personally.” Russell said.
Russell’s mother died of cancer and since then she’s had a devotion to pray for people who have the disease.
The remaining 50 quilts will be presented to Saint Francis Children’s Hospital Aug 2.
“It blesses me when I can bless others,” Russell said.
