Sertoma hears from Leadership Academy

Sertoma members welcomed guest speaker Shaun Barrett at their luncheon Thursday.

Barrett, who works for Century National Bank, spoke on the Pryor Chamber of Commerce’s Mayes County Leadership Academy (MCLA).

Attendees dined on chicken parmesean, green beans, french bread and salad before Barrett was introduced. Lemon cake was offered for desert.

Formerly called Leadership Pryor, MCLA is a training program that unites people and creates a backdrop of opportunity to work together for positive change.

According to the Chamber’s Web site, “MCLA helps create these changes by recruiting and selecting a diverse group of leaders for the Leadership Pryor Program. The Program consists of a series of 11 monthly sessions. Each thought-provoking and issue-oriented meeting provides participants with an enhanced perspective of the problems and opportunities facing our area.”

Barrett is currently enrolled in MCLA and spoke of the training sessions he’s attended as well as volunteer opportunities.

“It used to be called Leadership Pryor, but other towns in the county wanted to get involved and take the positive things they were seeing in Pryor back to their own communities,” Barrett said, adding that the program changed its name and focus to facilitate leadership throughout the county.

“We learn how we can impact our community and the county, through leadership and volunteer efforts,” he said.

In addition to the training, class members have traveled to the capitol to observe government at work. They’ve also participated in ropes courses and studied communication and various other media.

Barrett said the program was exceptional and a great way to get involved in the community.

“It’s about getting in tune with your community, then bridging the gap between need and help,” he said.
