Committee questions promotion process

May 12, 2012 Staff Writer Stefanie Cope

A decision to promote a new assistant fire chief at the Pryor Fire Department created some controversy at the Pryor Budget and Personnel Committee meeting Monday.

How to proceed with the promotion caused concern for members of the committee. Mayor Jimmy Tramel and Fire Chief Tim Thompson told the committee they planned on reviewing the resumes for every firefighter to make the promotion, instead of promoting the highest ranking member of the squad.

Councilman Drew Stott asked why the department decided to review resumes now and not in the past.

Thompson told Stott the department wanted to make sure the best person for the job was promoted.

The motion was approved with two votes of yes and a vote of no from Stott.

In other business, the committee:

• Approved recommending council action to reimburse the chamber of commerce for ads and promotions from Hotel/Motel Grant in the amount of $4,565.69 from cancelled checks and invoices received.

• Tramel told the committee the budget process will begin this week.

• Approved recommending council action to review Mayes County 911 System bids. The city has a grant for $50,000 to help pay for a new 911 system. The city is working with MESTA to install systems that will collaborate with each other.
