GRDA shoreline cleanup a success

The 2012 edition of the Grand Lake Shoreline Cleanup, held on Saturday, June 23, is being called a huge success by organizers.

“We filled seven 30-yard dumpsters completely full this year,” said Grand River Dam Authority Lakes Relation Coordinator Lori Starks. “We are just very appreciative of everyone who worked so hard to clean their property, their neighbor’s or just areas on Grand Lake where they visit and play. This was a great time for people to dump free of charge and we are glad so many people took advantage of it.”

Each year, GRDA works alongside the Grand Lake Sail & Power Squadron (GLSPS) to organize the “Lend a Hand to Lady Grand” event and provide the dumpsters free of charge. However, it’s the volunteer labor that really makes it all happen. GLSPS members manned dumpsters at Bernice State Park, at the Ketchum Church of Christ and at Grove Springs Park in Grove. Meanwhile, other volunteers around the shores of Grand Lake spent the day picking up shoreline debris (including large amounts of old dock foam) and delivering it to the dumpster sites.

Each year, the effort of volunteers during the cleanup helps rid Grand Lake’s scenic shoreline of large amounts of unsightly debris. Not only does that make the lake area even more attractive but it also makes its safer for lake visitors all summer long.

“GRDA wants to send a special thank you out to all the volunteers and to the GLSPS for continuing to make this event a success each year,” said Starks.

The GLSPS is headquartered in Grove, near the center of Grand Lake, and encompasses all the communities around the lake. The organization welcomes all boat owners, power and/or sail and enthusiasts to join in its efforts in promoting safe boating.
