Adair Chamber honors students

The Adair Chamber of Commerce recognized four students of the month from Adair High School at the meeting Tuesday.

“This will be the last set of students we recognize before the break,” Superintendent Tom Linihan said. “I’d like to thank the chamber for this partnership to showcase our students.”

Morgan Malley is the daughter of Sandra Malley.

Linihan called her an American Literature brainiac. She won first place in the Connors State College scholastic competition in American Literature in April.

Malley is a member of FCCLA and in the top 10 percent of her class. She plans to attend Rogers State University in the fall and live on the Claremore campus.

Michael Fraley is the son of Amanda and Mark Fraley. Linihan described him as a “super jock” who has been involved in all sports since the sixth grade.

Fraley was named all-district defensive back, all-district wide receiver, most valuable player in District 2A-8 and all-conference in basketball. He was named All-State in football.

Fraley plans to attend Northeastern State University. His major is undecided.

Rachel Webb is the daughter of Timothy and Lori Webb. She has served as FCCLA president, is a member of the choir and a football manager. She was voted Best All Around by her classmates and was the 2012 Prom Queen.

Webb plans to attend Rogers State University with a view to becoming a dental hygienist.

Zachary Barrett is the son of Mark Barrett. “We call him ‘Bear’ for some reason,” Linihan said.

Barrett has been active in FFA and athletics. He plans to attend career tech with a plan to become a welder.

Linihan said graduation is at 7:30 p.m. May 18. Baccalaureate, sponsored by the Adair Ministerial Alliance, is Sunday at 7 p.m. Both events are in the event center.

Linihan said this is the first senior class required to pass the End of Instruction Tests mandated by the state. At the time of the meeting, just one student had not passed all the EOI exams.

Linihan said next spring the school will ask voters to pass a bond issue for a high school renovation and synthetic track, which will also benefit community members who walk or run at the school.

“This is a zero tax increase,” Linihan said. It would continue the bond amount now in place which is set to expire.

The treasurer’s report showed the chamber’s account balance May 7 was $10,730.

Bette Schneider said the chamber has ordered three town signs to be placed at the city limits. One direction already has a sign. The signs are $450 each and match the existing one.

Fliers are available for the golf tournament June 9. Lunch will be included in the entry fee which is $50 pre-registration or $60 at the tournament at Grand Cherokee Golf Course near Pensacola Dam.

President Jay Vickers said the chamber is in the process of gaining 501(c)3 status, which is needed to apply for many grants. The chamber is seeking a grant to renovate the city park. A meeting to discuss the configuration of the park will be May 31, 5:30 p.m. at the community center. Park plans include skateboarding, basketball and a splash pad.

The Memorial Day program at the Adair Cemetery is scheduled for May 28 at 11 a.m.

The chamber’s ice cream social is set for Aug. 19. The winning ice cream maker receives a traveling trophy.

Secretary/treasurer Donna Vickers said many volunteers will be need for Christmas in the Country Nov. 10. “Because we’ll have lots of stuff going on.”

Vickers said she was too late to book the Express Clydesdales and stagecoach this year. The team was already booked. The chamber is looking for another horse drawn attraction for the parade.
