Firefighters install smoke detectors

Pryor firefighters installed 52 new smoke alarms in one day earlier this month.

Since November, they have installed 559 smoke alarms. There are 220 yet to be installed. The alarms were purchased through a grant from Oklahoma State University fire service publications and the Oklahoma State Fire Marshal’s office.

The alarms are provided at no cost, the only stipulation is the fire department must install the alarms. To apply for an alarm, contact the Pryor Fire Department at 918-825-3131.

Last weekend, Pryor firefighters held Rapid Intervention Team training. During this training, firefighters simulate the rescue of a firefighter  injured inside a burning building.

The RIT team consists of two firefighters who go into the building to make the rescue. They carry with them an extra air cylinder, face mask, regulator and a universal connection to assist the downed firefighter. Because RIT team members are inside a burning building, it is difficult for them to see. Part of the training is to help firefighters use the senses to find the injured firefighter. In addition to the Pryor firefighters, Locust Grove, Salina and Osage fire districts attended the training.
