Chamber meets academic all-stater

“This is the most rigorous academic competition in the state,” Adair School Superintendent Tom Linihan told Adair Chamber of Commerce Tuesday.

He brought Adair High School senior Chelsey Stricklen to the meeting and explained she has been chosen an academic all-stater by the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence. The honor designates Stricklen one of the top 100 seniors in Oklahoma.

In addition to winning a $1,000 scholarship, Stricklen will attend a black tie banquet in her honor May 22 at the Tulsa Renaissance Hotel. She scored 33 on her ACT college entrance test; on which 25 is considered a high score.

“Thursday she’ll go to Oklahoma City to try to get another gold ball,” Linihan said. Stricklen is the captain of the Lady Warriors basketball team and its lead scorer.

Linihan also presented Student of the Month Sam Oxford, daughter of Rick and Lisa Oxford.

“This is the golden arm,” Linihan said. “As a result of her efforts, Sam gets to go to college free.” Oxford has signed to attend Fort Scott Community College in Fort Scott, Kan., on a full ride scholarship. She was a

pitcher on a state championship softball team and a state runner-up champion team.

Linihan reported the FFA labor auction made over $28,000. He thanked area businesses for all their

support.

Spring break is next week.

“You may have read in the paper about Read America Week,” Linihan said. “We had green eggs and ham in the cafeteria on Dr. Suess’

birthday.”

Graduation is May 14. Adair has 48 seniors. “This is not a big class,” Linihan said, “but it’s a quality class.”

The sixth and seventh grade academic team is

headed to the state finals.

Six Adair seniors qualified as Oklahoma Academic region scholarship candidates, determined on a combination of grade point average and ACT scores.

Chamber members who have not paid their dues will be taken off the Web site. Membership amounts were due Jan. 1.

Treasurer Mary Steiner reported the chamber’s bank balance is currently $13,318.

Adair Chamber will hold a community coffee March 26, 8:30 a.m., at the community center. Businesses are invited to the informal gathering to talk about their

operations.

Adair’s Easter Egg Hunt is April 3 at the football field. Louise Osborn reported $165 has been donated for candy to fill the eggs. The hunt begins at 10 a.m.

Adair Chamber members will be working at Rocklahoma May 28 to 30. Diana Kennedy said she needs 10 to 15 more volunteers.

The chamber voted

to pay a six-horse Clydesdale hitch from Yukon $1,500 to come to Christmas in the Country Nov. 13.
