Pryor school gets grant for new science lab
Pryor Public Schools received two separate grants for a science lab at Pryor Junior High.
Don Raleigh, superintendent of Pryor Schools, announced the grants at last Monday’s school board meeting. The two grants are designated to create a Gateway To Technology Science lab.
The first grant is $25,000 from the State Department of CareerTech. The grant will provide
scientific equipment and teacher training to implement the program.
Gateway To Technology (GTT) curriculum provides project-based learning for the full range of students in grades six, seven and eight. The curriculum relates technology to students’ daily lives and promotes
communication and collaboration by emphasizing a teaming approach in the instructional units.
The second grant came from the Google Inc. Charitable Giving Fund of Tides Foundation. This grant is $30,000, designated to help with purchasing computers and technology equipment for a GTT lab.
The GTT program is designed to be a hands-on
science experience. The program allows students to utilize technology to explore scientific principles. It shows students how technology is used in engineering to solve everyday problems. The instructional units motivate students to use their imaginations and be creative, while gaining the skills they need.
In assisting with the grant, Data Center Facilities Manager Mike Edwards said, “We have had an excellent experience in Mayes County and are committed to helping address the needs of the region that supports our data center through grants like these. We look forward to continuing to work with and be part of the community over the coming years.”
Raleigh congratulated Roosevelt Elementary for raising $2,902 for St. Jude Hospital. The elementary school held a number of fundraisers to help the cause.
Raleigh said the interior work at Lincoln Elementary is going well. He said the construction crew is “making inroads on the groundwork” for the new Early Learning Center. Interior work is also underway at the high school.
The board hired Jessica Poorboy as a non-certified cafeteria staff member and bus driver for the remainder of the 2009-10 school year.
