Mayes County Farmers Market, opening May 15, will be held on the courthouse lawn.

Shane Simpson, director of Pryor Creek Recreation Center, Pryor Area Chamber of Commerce President Barbara Hawkins, and Connie Arnold, director of the market, spoke with Mayes County Commissioners Monday about a waiver and liability release. Simpson, Hawkins, and Arnold have been working to get the farmer’s market started.

The farmer’s market will be held on Saturdays, beginning May 15, from 8 to 11 a.m. The market will be set up in the courthouse parking lot, on the west side of the Mayes County Courthouse. Hawkins said the market will be open through the last Saturday of October. The market will

consist mostly of produce.

The market has 26 interested vendors so far. Hawkins told the commissioners there is an annual fee of $20 for vendors. Vendor fees will go back into the farmer’s market funds to help with promotions and other costs.

The farmer’s market was started with a $5,000 grant from Cherokee Nation through the HOPE Coalition.

Commissioners approved an interlocal agreement with KAMO Power for the

overlay of Quail Drive at Sportsmen Acres. District 2 Commissioner Darrell Yoder said heavy trucks have torn up the road driving back and forth to the new KAMO substation. Yoder said KAMO has agreed to pay $153,000 to help overlay the road.

The county received a reimbursement of $10,204 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The funds are a reimbursement for the county’s

hazard mitigation plan.

Another $4,000 was designated to Mayes County Emergency Management for their regular share of expense reimbursement from the state.

The county received $100,000 from the state to assist with costs related to the May 2009 flood.

Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. will be visiting the courthouse and county barns to present their plan to county employees. Representative Ron Kite said he will give a

20-minute presentation to the groups. Employees who sign up with Pre-Paid Legal will pay $15.95 a month to provide legal counsel to their families.
