OKLAHOMA CITY — Gov. Mary Fallin signed a proclamation declaring April 2012 as “Science and Technology Month” in Oklahoma.
The Oklahoma Center for the Advancement of Science and Technology sponsors Science and Technology Month in April as an opportunity to promote education in science and technology related courses, while also emphasizing the importance of these fields to Oklahoma’s economy.
OCAST recognizes Oklahoma’s outstanding science students in April and encourages children to take an interest in science, technology, engineering and math.
Teachers across the state are encouraged to nominate their outstanding science students for a Science and Technology Award signed by Fallin and OCAST executive director C. Michael Carolina. Students from each of Oklahoma’s 77 counties have been recognized during the Science and Technology Month program in previous years.
“These students are our future engineers and entrepreneurs who will be developing new products and medical treatments,” said Carolina. “It’s important to peak their interest in science, technology, engineering and math at an early age to ensure the economic future of our state. Providing a strong education for our children in STEM curriculum is a key element to their success in college and the workforce and to the future of Oklahoma.”
In 2011, OCAST and its strategic partners, the Oklahoma Manufacturing Alliance and i2E, created or retained 1,549 jobs in Oklahoma. OCAST funded 54 projects in 2011, investing nearly $19 million. Throughout OCAST’s 24-year history, the organization has funded more than 2,310 projects totaling nearly $215 million.
“We appreciate the support from Governor Fallin to help spark enthusiasm about science in Oklahoma,” Carolina said. “Oklahoma has a great opportunity to grow the science and technology industry."
OCAST is the state’s technology-based economic development agency created in 1987 to expand and diversify Oklahoma’s economy and foster quality jobs. For more information about OCAST or Science and Technology Month in Oklahoma, call (866) 265-2215 or visit www.ocast.ok.gov.
