(AP) — Intense heat will continue across Oklahoma with no relief in sight for most areas.
The culprit is an entrenched upper-level ridge of high pressure over the southern Plains, the National Weather Service said. Such features are typical for this time of year in Oklahoma, but temperatures are well above average.
A heat advisory from the weather service is in effect for 49 counties in western, central and southern Oklahoma through Sunday. An excessive heat warning is in effect through Saturday for 22 counties in northeast Oklahoma.
Heat index values are expected to be between 105 and 110 degrees through at least Sunday in the advisory and warning areas. Lows are only forecast to dip below 70 in the Oklahoma Panhandle.
On Friday, skies were partly cloudy in the far north and mostly clear elsewhere. Temperatures ranged from 95 degrees in the Broken Bow area in southeast Oklahoma to 114 degrees in Buffalo and Freedom in northwest Oklahoma, according to the Oklahoma Mesonet.
Other triple-digit temperatures included 113 degrees in Alva, Gage and Medford; 112 degrees in Kingfisher and Lahoma; 111 degrees in Cherokee, Clinton, Enid, Seiling and Woodward and 110 in Hobart.
The mercury peaked at 101 degrees in Tulsa and hit 103 degrees in Oklahoma City, according to the weather service.
A low pressure trough in Kansas may give far northern Oklahoma an outside shot at some thunderstorms over the next few days, but the possibility is slim. Otherwise, skies should be sunny to partly cloudy and very hot, with temperatures ranging from the 90s in the southeast to the 110s in the northwest on Saturday. Lows in the 60s and 70s are expected Saturday night.
Temperatures will vary little Sunday through Wednesday, with temperatures in the 90s and low 100s all four days. Lows through the period should fall into the 60s and 70s.
