LOCUST GROVE —
Seventy students from the Locust Grove area will head back to school next week with new backpacks full
of school supplies, thanks to the
discipleship team of the First United Methodist Church of Locust Grove.
On Saturday, Aug. 14, the students in Pre-K through fifth grade and their families were welcomed to a Backpack Carnival where they received their supplies and enjoyed hot dogs, chips and drinks. They also participated in carnival games and face painting.
“We had a pretty good crowd,” church secretary Marea Breedlove said. “We also had a lot of youth from the church come and help.”
The backpacks were filled with basic supplies for each child. Then the packs were customized for the
different grades. Although the children didn’t get everything on their school list, they did get a good start.
Some of the money raised to make the backpacks and put on the carnival was put aside to purchase large
bottles of Germex and boxes of Kleenex for the classrooms.
The Discipleship team will be back in action raising money for the next backpack carnival in just a few days. The church will host a poker run Saturday, Aug. 28.
Motorcycle and hot rod entries are welcome. Registration will be from
1 p.m. to 3 p.m., and will cost $15. The run will be from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., starting and ending at the church.
The run will have five stops where contestants will draw a card. The
player with the best hand will win. There will also be prizes for the fastest
finish, slowest finish and worst hand. This year a new competition will be added — the headlight bug game.
All of the money raised will go to the backpack project. Donations will be accepted as well.
