Oaks Mission Elementary students enjoy Read Across America Day

OAKS — Employee volunteers from Cherokee Nation Businesses and Cherokee Nation brought personal childhood favorites such as “The Cat in the Hat,” “Green Eggs and Ham” and “The Lorax” to Oaks Mission Elementary School as part of the annual Read Across America Day.

An annual partnership between CNB and Oaks Mission Elementary, Read Across America is an award-winning literacy program founded by the National Education Association in coalition with Dr. Seuss Enterprises, L.P. and Random House. Every year, on or around the birthday of the beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss, CNB employee volunteers celebrate by reading to children in local communities.

“Spending the afternoon reading to students at Oaks was such a pleasure,” said Sherry Baker, First Lady of the Cherokee Nation. “It’s important to get our children interested in reading from a young age, and this is a fun way to do it. Everyone at the school was so gracious, and I look forward to finding ways to get involved in other schools inside our Cherokee Nation.”

Volunteers visited kindergarten through fifth-grade classrooms with their favorite stories, in hopes to increase student achievement and reading ability.

“There is a big world out there our kids can be a part of.  Reading is how you get there, both physically and vicariously,” said Barbara Tucker, Oaks Mission Elementary principal. “A love for reading can be inspired and taught and is a gift that will last a lifetime. We are grateful to the volunteers for sharing that gift with them.”

National Education Association’s Read Across America Day is a nationwide reading celebration. Schools, libraries and community centers participate by bringing together volunteers, kids and books to highlight the importance of developing a love for reading at an early age.
