Rep. Doug Cox
As everyone has probably heard, beginning Nov. 1 Oklahoma will join 44 other states to allow open carry of firearms. I just want to remind everyone that you must have taken and passed a concealed carry weapons class – and have the permit on your person – in order to open carry. Also, a law enforcement officer has the right to ask you to produce your concealed carry permit at any time you are openly carrying a firearm. Don’t forget to be alert for the “no guns allowed” signs or symbols that many businesses will place on their entry doors.
We are getting close to the November elections. Like you, I will be glad when it is over. It seems like the presidential race has lasted a lifetime. They actually have been campaigning for over two years. The debates have been interesting. I thought that during the second presidential debate they were both rude and kept interrupting one another. They could each use a lesson in Oklahoma manners. If they want to be rude, let it be to the leaders of countries where they burn American flags, not to each other.
I encourage each of you to vote. Not only for the race for president, but also for the election of our new U.S. Congressman to replace Dan Boren, who is not seeking re-election. Don’t forget to also cast your ballot for state legislative contests and the state questions. America is founded on the principle of an informed, involved public—that is what makes democracy work. Our soldiers have fought and died for our freedom to express our choices at the ballot box. Do not let them have died in vain – cast your vote!
Speaking of elections, I do support the idea of using the popular vote over the Electoral College in selecting our president. I hope we do not have a president that wins by obtaining a majority of the Electoral College but a minority of the popular vote.
