Pelivan offers transportation options

Ben Sherrer
Oklahoma State Representative

CHOUTEAU — Most of us don’t think that much about transportation – until we don’t have it or are unable to drive. For years I’ve seen those Pelivans around the area and didn’t know what they were. Here it is in a nutshell.

Mayes County and five other counties in Northeast Oklahoma have worked with Pelivan Transit for the past 25 years to provide on-demand, curb-to-curb transportation services. The Pelivan Transit System will work with people of all ages and income levels to meet transportation needs for medical, employment, nutrition, social/recreation, education, and shopping. Fares for riders are very reasonable ranging from free to $2.50 one way – much less than the cost of driving a personal vehicle.

Pelivan Transit has also partnered with Clean Energy in Oklahoma and has received several grants from the state and federal government to further their pursuit of using Clean Natural Gas buses to provide transport. They are currently working to upgrade and construct four CNG stations in Rogers, Ottawa, Craig and Mayes Counties as a part of their project called “Natural ‘Gas Up’ Green Country.”

In short, the program provides a valuable service to citizens but has the additional benefits of reducing our carbon footprint on our environment and playing a part in decreasing our dependence on foreign oil.

I fully support Pelivan Transit and its pursuit of providing a more energy efficient alternative for transportation. I encourage everyone to research Pelivan’s transportation options and how your family might be able to utilize their services.
