TODAY'S HISTORY: In 1958, playwright Arthur Miller won a two-year-long appeal battle against his contempt of Congress conviction for refusing to give a list of names in his House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) testimony.

In 1964, Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin resolution, giving President Lyndon Johnson wide discretionary power in responding to reported Vietnamese attacks.

In 1998, U.S. embassies in Tanzania and Kenya were bombed.
