TODAY'S HISTORY: In 1898, the U.S. Navy, led by Commodore George Dewey, defeated the Spanish Pacific fleet during the Spanish-American War.

In 1948, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) was established, with Kim Il Sung as president.

In 2011, the United States was notified that U.S. forces had killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaida and mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, in a nighttime raid in Pakistan.
