National FFA honors state CareerTech director

The National FFA Organization has selected Phil Berkenbile, state director of the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education to receive a special VIP Citation for making significant contributions to agricultural education. The VIP Citation is one of the

most prestigious awards for supporting FFA and its programs. Berkenbile will be honored during at the 83rd National FFA Convention, held Oct. 20-23 in Indianapolis, Ind.

Berkenbile’s focus has always been on people:

family, friends, students and colleagues.

“So many people helped me get where I am today,” Berkenbile said. “Agriculture was a big part of my life.”

The VIP Citation recognizes the dedicated individuals who contribute to the FFA mission of student success through their hard work and cooperation.

As a high school freshman, Berkenbile developed a desire to become an agricultural education teacher. He earned three degrees from Oklahoma State University and went on to teach agricultural edu-

cation for 16 years. In

1988 Berkenbile joined the agricultural education division of the ODCTE as central district supervisor. In 1995 he became the Morrison Public Schools superintendent. He returned to the ODCTE as associate state director in 1999 and was named state director in 2004.

As state director he oversees the largest CareerTech system in the nation. His leadership has provided a solid foundation for agricultural education and FFA in Oklahoma.
