Cattlemen invited to learn about new five-way vaccine
Mayes and Rogers County cattlemen are invited to learn about something new.
Meetings are set for both counties to inform producers of a new nasal five-way vaccine. The Mayes County meeting is Feb. 18, 2009, at Mayes County Fairgrounds. The Rogers County meeting is Feb. 19, 2009, at the Expo center. Both meetings will begin with supper at
6:30 p.m., followed by the information meeting.
Onset 5 IN came on the market in July. Made by Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health, Onset is the first intranasally administered, five-way modified-live virus vaccine for healthy cattle three to eight days and older.
Onset is designed to stimulate at the site of infection an immune response to Bovine Virus Diarrhea Type 1 and Type 2, Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis, Parainfluenza 3 and Bovine Syncytial Virus - the costliest diseases impacting beef and dairy cattle.
Intranasal vaccination more closely mirrors the route of real infection. According to Drovers news source, more than 95 percent of disease-causing agents enter through the nose, causing primary respiratory disease and
often secondary infections. Intranasal administration allows a more rapid immune response. The vaccine is delivered straight to the mucosal surfaces where infection occurs rather than taking a systemic route.
“This is the first new thing we’ve seen in a long time,” said Tad Bell, Sales Representative for Dixon Farm Supply. “This is easy and producers can give it at the same time they brand.”
Bell said another nice feature of Onset is the nasal gel is blue, so the calves noses are easily marked when they are given the vaccine. In addition, the gel stays in the nose better than liquid.
“This has worked especially well on stale cattle,” Bell said, upon arrival of stockers or feeders, Onset can induce a rapid response to disease in the face of high stress.
Onset 5 IN will be available for purchase at the meetings, through veterinarians or animal health suppliers.
