Show barn improvements in progress

PRYOR — Mayes County Fair Board has put in a new show ring at the fairgrounds.

Fair board president Kelly Brown said the board purchased the ring with $10,000 accumulated from renting the fairground facilities. The new ring includes holding pens for livestock at the north and south ends of the ring.

The fair board received a grant earlier this year from

the Oliver Dewey Mayor Foundation for an addition to the show barn. The $234,000 grant is funding an addition to the east end of the barn, 161 x 51 feet. Brown said the addition will have a 18 x 43 foot wash bay, as well as electrical work, plumbing and sound.

Crystal Prichett, fair board secretary, said the board hopes to have the new building finished by the 2010 fair. Plans are to put up the steel for the building within a week. The addition will be extra space to house livestock during the fair.

The fair board also purchased a pair of scales for weighing livestock. Brown said the old set of scales had safety issues because larger animals could jump over the sides. The new scales, which cost $2,300, are taller. The new set of scales is also portable.
