The National Day of the American Cowboy campaign was founded by American Cowboy magazine in 2004 to preserve, protect and promote our cowboy and Western heritage and lobby for the passage of a national resolution designating the fourth Saturday of every July a permanent celebration on the national calendar honoring cowboys and cowgirls for their enduring contribution to the courageous, pioneering spirit of America.
The mission of the National Day of the Cowboy nonprofit organization is to contribute to the preservation of America’s Cowboy heritage so that the history and culture which the United States Congress's National Day of the Cowboy resolution honors, can be shared and perpetu-ated for the public good, through education, the
arts, celebrations, gatherings, rodeos, and community activities. This year is the sixth annual National Day of the American Cowboy on July 24.
Thanks to the support of the late Wyoming Senator Craig Thomas, the resolution’s earliest proponent, and to the outpouring of letters and petitions from American Cowboy readers to legislators and the President, the National Day of the American Cowboy Resolution was first passed by the United States Senate in 2005. That same year, George W. Bush issued a statement of support for the resolution, proclaiming, “We celebrate the cowboy as a symbol of the grand history of the American West.” The resolution has been passed each year since 2005.
The fifth annual Cowboy Traders Day is July 24 and 25 at Whitaker Park in Pryor. Vendors will be on site along with buggy and pony rides and many food stands.
Free breakfast will be served before cowboy church Sunday morning at 10 a.m. For information call 698-8442 or 825-2403.
Salina will have Day of the American Cowboy downtown from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., including chuckwagon cooking, western music and a
Will Rogers impersonator. Everything is free to the
public. For more information call 434-8223.
